who are we?

Financial literacy rates are among the lowest in Gen-Z — and we want to change that. Started by two 16-year-olds, Gen-Z for Financial Literacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to raising youth financial literacy rates. We are fiscally sponsored by Hack+, a nonprofit & start-up accelerator.

Though Gen-Z for Financial Literacy is based in the United States, we have staff worldwide who help fuel our movement. Our team consists of people from over a dozen U.S. states and four countries — all working toward one goal: raising financial literacy rates in Gen-Z.

there’s no sugar-coating it:

youth fINANCIAL illiteracy is a Big issue

When the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen-X, and Gen-Y were our age, they had considerably higher financial literacy rates, according to a study by the TIAA Institute.

Yet, financial literacy is an important life skill for everyone. No matter where you were born, where you grew up, or where you went to school, learning about money and how to manage your finances is crucial — especially as you enter your adult years and begin working.

In 2023, more than half of U.S. states still didn’t require classes on financial literacy or personal finances to graduate, leaving the next generation of students ill-prepared to enter the real world. Once students turn 18, they have to navigate the complex process of learning about bank accounts, tax filings, and money management (among many other things) on their own.

Schools across the United States should teach personal finance. We’re working to make that happen and raise awareness on the importance of youth financial literacy.
